Progress and Policies in Canadian Cities
Green Bus Technology Plan TTC has purchased 60 electric buses from 3 manufacturers, these buses will enter service in 2019. TTC is planning to buy over 900 e-buses between 2018 and 2027. No diesel or hybrid buses will be purchased after 2024. All e-buses will be long range, charged at the garage at night and between shifts. TTC is working closely with Toronto Hydro on power storage and this will reduce the cost of charging significantly.
Montreal has been running a pilot project with Nova buses and is now expanding the pilot to 40 buses. The new order has gone to New Flyer for long range buses. Montreal is planning to stop buying diesel buses in 2025.
Laval has partnered with Montreal and is receiving 10 New Flyer long range buses. Laval is planning to stop buying diesel buses in 2023.
Edmonton has ordered 50 e-buses from Proterra following winter trials documented in the Marcon Edmonton Electric Bus Feasibility Study Edmonton is looking to stop buying diesel buses in 2020.
Vancouver has signed the C40 Fossil Fuel Free Streets Declaration and will not be buying diesel buses after 2025. Translink has ordered 4 buses for their initial trials in 2019. This two-and-a-half year integration trial is part of a pan-Canadian initiative led by the Canadian Urban Transit Research and Innovation Consortium (CUTRIC). Vancouver already operates 262 electric trolley buses, one of the few surviving trolley bus networks in North America.
St Albert AB
St Albert has been running e-buses since 2017, expanding the fleet in 2018.
BC Transit in Victoria has been running electric bus trials since early 2018, BYD and New Flyer are providing the buses for the trial. Green Power has been trialing its double decker e-bus with CVS tours in Victoria.
Lethbridge is moving forward with electric buses, a contract for 7 buses was tendered in later 2018.
Calgary is looking at investing $26M in an e-bus pilot
Winnipeg is studying e-buses. Winnipeg Transit currently operates a demonstration with 4 e-buses from New Flyer.
Halifax has produced a detailed study on e-buses.
Belleville ran a 6 week trial in 2017 with BYD
Gatineau ran a trial with BYD in 2013 including runs in to Ottawa, even at this early date, the trial demonstrated a practical range of about 250 km.

Alexander Dennis based in Edinburgh UK and Napanee, IL, is working with Proterra to deliver electric double deckers to Foothill Transit in California. ADL also works with BYD for the European market.
BYD based in Xi’an China and Lancaster, CA, is one of the largest manufacturers of electric buses.
Green Power Based in Vancouver BC and Porterville, CA.
New Flyer based in Winnipeg MB.
Nova based in St-Eustache QC, part of the Volvo Group.
Proterra based in Burlingame, CA. Proterra is currently the largest North American e-Bus manufacturer.

Thomas Built Buses based in High Point, NC, Thomas is part of the Daimler Trucks North America Group. Thomas is working with Proterra.
